FIRST
CHAMPION
AND GRAND CHAMPION
After
falling
totally in love with these beautiful White Shepherds, my primary goal
with Kyra has revolved around
the Total
Dog philosophy put forth by the United Kennel Club.
Along
with the
tough challenge of trying to tame this "wild child," I have worked to
shape her into a biddable enough dog that she could be an example of
the versatility of the White Shepherd (see Bloodlines Jan.-Feb. 2000
issue, page 78). The key words are "biddable enough" -- biddable does
not describe Ky.
I
wanted to
demonstrate the breadth of their ability to learn. These goals have
almost been accomplished. Kyra has
earned 41 titles and certificates so far. They include 8
conformation titles,
2 obedience titles, 2 rally obedience titles (first WS to earn them), 8
agility titles (including first UKC WS Agility Champion), 2
packdog titles, 1 water rescue
title, 1 advanced water rescue merit badge, 4 herding titles, 3 flyball
titles (including a flyball championship), and 2 herding instinct
certifications (ducks and sheep - 3 if I count the Texas Longhorns she
herded). She earned three versatility titles.
More
importantly, she has been
therapy dog certified and temperament certified with the following:
Canine Good Citizen (CGC), the Canadian version too), Therapy
Dog
International (TDI), Dog Scouts
of America (DSA), and passed her Temperament Test with flying
colors. She was the first White Shepherd to earn the 0-VCCX -
now
called simply O-V meaning Outstanding Versatility.
She
has 1 leg
toward her UKC CD, 1 leg toward her AKC
Open
Agility title, and is training for her first tracking title.
She
will also soon enter her first AKC Rally Obedience trial and her first
World Canine Free Style trials. We are still planning to go
for
her Advanced Water Rescue WTXX, the Shutzhund Companion Dog - BH, and
her ASCA Started title with sheep if her health and my energy hold
out.
Meanwhile,
we
continue to deepen our bond and build our partnership as we train and
learn together. On a proud note, Kyra earned her first 35
titles
before she was diagnosed with Lumbosacral Stenosis and Inflammatory
Bowel Diesease in January of 2002. The rest of the the titles
were earned after her comeback.
